EDUC-3040 Literacy in Content Areas

(COMMUNITY-ENGAGED LEARNING) This course focuses on integrating literacy into content area subjects for elementary and secondary education. It offers an in-depth exploration of developmental and instructional methods related to fluent reading, vocabulary acquisition, comprehension, and writing instruction. Students will study and practice principles of explicit and systematic instruction in these essential aspects of literacy. The course includes 25 hours of required fieldwork, which involves observations, small group activities, and teaching at least three lessons in a K-12 setting. Students are responsible for arranging transportation to the field site, and these hours are in addition to regular class time. Participants will demonstrate proficiency in Standard 2 (Fluency, Vocabulary Development, and Comprehension) of the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Standards. Additionally, students will compile a required teaching portfolio, which must include two artifacts aligned with the ten InTASC standards. Formerly EDU-305.
