PHI-257 Indian Philosophy

An introduction to the history of Indian philosophy. We will read from primary source texts and proceed fairly chronologically. Traditions studied may include: Brahmanism, the Carvaka, Jainism, Buddhism, the Nyaya, Vaishesika, Samkhya, the Yoga systems, and Vedanta philosophy. Sample topics may include: What is the nature of the self, and is it just a conceptual construct? Is there an afterlife with karmic fruits? Even putting aside an afterlife, can we make sense of karma without a self? What are the foundations of knowledge? What is the nature of perception? Is the world physical or "all in the head"?
