PHI-255 Modern Philosophy

A survey of philosophy in the modern period. We study the rationalist and empiricist schools by reading philosophers like Descartes, Elisabeth of Bohemia, Malebranche, Leibniz, Berkeley, Shepherd, Hume, Astell, and Cavendish. Sample topics might include: Do we have innate ideas? What is space and time? Do natural laws govern, or do they merely summarize events? What does it mean to say God is omnipresent, or tripersonal? Are you the same (one) person sober as drunk?
