HIST-2550 African Diaspora in Latin America

(SELF & SOCIETY, ENGAGING DIFFERENCE) Modern scholars consider the history of the African diaspora in Latin America "the third root," a perspective that has been reevaluated in recent years. This course examines the African diaspora's history, culture, and socio-political impact in Latin America, from the transatlantic slave trade to contemporary times. Students will explore how African-descended populations have been shaped by the region's cultural, political, and economic landscapes. The course covers topics such as slavery and resistance, the construction of racial identities, Afro-Latin religious traditions, and the role of Afro-descendant communities in movements for social justice and cultural recognition.
