Islam is one of the great monotheistic faiths of the modern world. This survey course examines the history and tenets of Islam and the breadth of Muslim cultures and civilizations. PREREQUISITE: None.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain and understand the path of any state with reference to common variables and dynamics.
  • Distinguish common factors in wider region versus specific to country.
  • Explain and predict path of country in political, economic, international, and oppositional movements.
  • Read any state’s history and project the trends driving it.
  • Divide Middle Eastern states by their political and economic types.
  • Analyze differing paths of civil-military relations and business-government relations.
  • Identify the social base of the state, upon which the state was formed.
  • Analyze the factors leading to the uprisings, their successes or failures.
  • Understand the background to the current rise of sectarianism and potential division of states.
