NS3361 Politics and Security in Levant

A survey course on the politics and security of the Levant in the post-World War I era. The geographic focus is on the countries of Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine. PREREQUISITE: None.

  • Delineate the trajectory of non-state actors and interactions with state actors
  • Distinguish elements of state business-government relationships that determine larger outcomes

  • Analyze how civil-military relations generate particular state capacities and weaknesses
  • Identify areas for policy improvement
