NS3181 Introduction to Homeland Defense and Security

This course surveys the distinctive features and challenges of homeland defense and security, with emphasis on the interagency process by which the contributions of the armed forces and defense agencies are integrated with those of civilian federal agencies and state and local governments.   • Critically assess the strengths, weaknesses, limitations of homeland security laws, policies, and practices and what all of it means.
  • Elaborate the working definitions for terms and concepts in homeland security.
  • Asses the underlying assumptions for commonly held homeland security beliefs that frequently result in laws and policies.
  • Appraise the laws, interpretation, and practices that inform homeland security, both from the perspective of the security sector and in terms of popular expectations.
  • Create and test a conceptual framework (enduring questions) and process of inquiry to understand present problems.
