NS3301 African History and Cultures

This course provides a broad overview of African history, with an emphasis on understanding the historical foundations of important contemporary issues. In addition, it examines the process of cultural change in Africa over the course of the twentieth century, through an in-depth study of the fiction of Chinua Achebe. PREREQUISITE: None.

Students should be able to:

  • Evaluate the long-term implications of various historical developments in Africa.
  • Debate the relative importance of geography and external influence in shaping the array of contemporary African institutions. 
  • Produce a critical comparative review of alternate approaches to explaining the historical foundations of contemporary African problems. 
  • Recognize and discuss implicit theories of history in literary texts.
