NS3710 Government and Security in Western Europe

Survey and analysis of government and security issues in contemporary Western Europe. The course emphasizes the post-1945 history, government, political system, and security policies of Britain, France, Italy, and Germany. Major topics include relations with the United States and policies concerning the future of NATO and the European Union. Prerequisites: None.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

·      Understand the origins and main characteristics of the political and security institutions, policies, doctrines and outlooks of the main Western European powers.

·      Analyze how the interaction among these countries shapes NATO, the European Union and trans-Atlantic cooperation.

·      Identify the key political, socio-economic and security trends and challenges facing the countries of Western Europe.

·      Critically assess various perspectives on Europe’s future trajectory, as well as their implications for U.S. foreign and security policy, and grand strategy.
