This Course will study normal periodontium, periodontal pathology, etiology and principles of periodontal disease, examination procedures, and principles of periodontal therapy, non-surgical periodontal therapy and prevention modalities. American Academy of Periodontium classifications will be studied.

III. Catalog Course Description

Periodontics is a specialty of dentistry that includes the prevention diagnosis of disease. This Course will study normal periodontium, periodontal pathology, etiology and principles of periodontal disease, examination procedures, and principles of periodontal therapy, non-surgical periodontal therapy and prevention modalities. American Academy of Periodontium classifications will be studied.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge in regard to disease prevalence. Study research designs, indices and statistical significance.
• Educate patients in prevention of recurrent periodontitis with emphasis on compliance and maintenance and prognosis in relation to patient desire.
• Demonstrate knowledge of oral histology and anatomy.
• Comprehension of the Pathogenesis from the microbiology to the immune system response.
• Describe the role of etiologic factors both local and systemic as well as primary versus secondary factors. Be aware of the ability to help guide patients to change habits and control detrimental factors.
• Demonstrate gingivitis classification chronology development and healing. Describe viral, fungal and bacterial diseases. Describe the classification of periodontal diseases, chronic versus aggressive and the effect of medications.
• Identify treatment plans that correctly address patient needs measuring conditions and outcomes using informed consent to develop a patient care plan that is well documented.
• Identify TMD conditions with the ability to document conditions and refer appropriately.
• Identify periodontal emergencies and the impacts of systemic disease from transmission of contagious to immunosupression, treatment complication and medication side effects.
• Demonstrate knowledge of dental implant design, surgical placement, osseo-integration, loading of maintenance and recommended treatment of peri- implantitis.
• Demonstrate anatomical and patient limitations to complete plaque removal. Identify the function, goals, methods, limitations and potential damage from nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
• Identify patient requirements for periodontal surgery when necessary. Understand goals of access to clean versus resective treatment with pocket reduction and regenerative procedures.
• Identify oral cancerous lesions and all pathologies of the oral cavity using accurate detailed and clear descriptions on documentation.
