III. Catalog Course Description
This course includes lecture and study activities on the complete morphology and nomenclature of human dentition. Topics include normal anatomy and physiology of the teeth, histology of the teeth and oral structures and embryological development of the oral cavity.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Define and pronounce the key terms in this chapter.
- Integrate the knowledge of surface anatomy of the face, neck, oral cavity, and pharynx and associated surface landmarks on a patient and incorporate this into the clinical practice of patient examination and the understanding of the developmental aspects of these regions.
- Integrate a background on prenatal development into the development of the face, neck, and oral structures and developmental disturbances related to these structures.
- Integrate the knowledge of the anatomy and histology of the temporomandibular joint and occlusion into the dental treatment of the patient.
- Integrate the knowledge of periodontium, dental anatomy of the permanent anterior teeth, permanent posterior teeth, and primary teeth into the dental treatment of patients.
- Discuss the events that occur during the development of the teeth and associated structures and during tooth eruption.
- Explain the knowledge of the histology with the related pathology that may occur within oral mucosa, gingival and Dento-gingival Junctional tissues.
- Demonstrate and discuss the microscopic features of enamel, dentin and pulp - apposition and maturation.
