III. Catalog Course Description

The course provides the student with the knowledge base and practice in basic emergency management of dental office emergencies. The student will be able to recognize signs and symptoms of emergency conditions and understand the treatment required for the patient.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of an office emergency routine and the role of each dental team member during an emergency.
  • Describe the contents of the office emergency kit and how & when each item is used.
  • Explain the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classifications and its importance in preventing medical emergencies in the dental setting.
  • Demonstrate management of common medical emergencies to include but not limited to Syncope, Shock, Hyperventilation, Seizure disorders, Cerebrovascular Accident, Angina Pectoris, Myocardial Infarction, Asthma, Allergic Reaction, Diabetes/Endocrine, Obstructed Airway, Excessive Bleeding and Intraocular Foreign Body.
  • Demonstrate the completion and updating of medical & dental history forms.
  • Demonstrate taking and recording the four primary vital signs.
  • Demonstrate the administration of oxygen using various delivery devices.
  • Demonstrate use of CPR, AED, Rescue Breathing and Relief of Choking for adults, children and infants.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies to include but not limited to Syncope, Shock, Hyperventilation, Seizure disorders, Cerebrovascular Accident, Angina Pectoris, Myocardial Infarction, Asthma, Allergic Reaction, Diabetes/Endocrine, Obstructed Airway, Excessive Bleeding and Intraocular Foreign Body.
  • Describe prevention of common medical emergencies to include but not limited to Syncope, Shock, Hyperventilation, Seizure disorders, Cerebrovascular Accident, Angina Pectoris, Myocardial Infarction, Asthma, Allergic Reaction, Diabetes/Endocrine, Obstructed Airway, Excessive Bleeding and Intraocular Foreign Body.
