DENH 101 Introduction to Dental Hygiene

This Course is designed to introduce the student to the basic components of Dental Hygiene practice. Various methods and principles to prevent disease transmission will be instructed. The chain of infection control affecting the dental office environment will be demonstrated and developed. Topics include blood borne pathogens, federal regulations, dental office asepsis protocol, with chemical and emergency plans. Basic assessments competency of exposure control protocols, instrumentation techniques, and oral hygiene development. The use and care of dental instruments and equipment will be demonstrated and evaluated.

III. Catalog Course Description

This Course is designed to introduce the student to the basic components of Dental Hygiene practice. Various methods and principles to prevent disease transmission will be instructed. The chain of infection control affecting the dental office environment will be demonstrated and developed. Topics include blood borne pathogens, federal regulations, dental office asepsis protocol, with chemical and emergency plans. Basic assessments competency of exposure control protocols, instrumentation techniques, and oral hygiene development. The use and care of dental instruments and equipment will be demonstrated and evaluated.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Professionalism: Value patient confidentiality and patient rights – HIPPA guidelines. Understand professional and ethical behavior.
  • Interpersonal communication: The student will develop understanding in the contextual factors that influence interpersonal communication. They will employ communication skills of Verbal and Non-verbal communication. The student will show competency through self-assessment and peer review documents. Students will role play scenarios and will practice techniques and skills with open-ended questions and closed ended questions.
  • Prevention of Disease Transmission: Describe Scope of Microbiology and Infection Control. Define emerging Disease and ways infectious disease may emerge. Use infection control and hazard management during dental hygiene services. Select and use methods of infection control and disinfection. List the mission of the safety health organizations.
  • Demonstrate proper operator positioning and patient positioning: Recognize the need to prevent the risk of injury to self and patient by selecting proper operating positioning.
  • Discuss Time Management and motion management for efficient Dental Hygiene Care - Patient Assessment: Obtain a comprehensive health and dental history. Interpret Vital signs. Perform intra and extra oral examination of the head, neck and oral cavity. Document Hard and soft deposits. Describe the general nature of the normal Oral microbiota. Define biofilm and its formation on the teeth. Perform Dental Charting. List types and mechanism of dental caries formation. Document gingival assessment, recession, furcation, mobility and pathology. Evaluate patient risk factors for oral disease. Differentiate the types of periodontal Disease. List general approaches to preventing associated disease of Decay and periodontal disease.
  • Planning of Dental Hygiene Care: Formulate patient assessment findings and risk factors. Synthesis into a treatment plan and case presentations. Include goals of the patient. Oral health analysis. Discuss preventative and therapeutic services. Plan appointments and the sequence of health services. Obtain and understand informed consent.
  • Documentation Dental Records: Apply principles of accurate records through documentation. Proposed DHCP Plans. Recommend supportive care. Referral assessments. Re-evaluation of patient oral Health. Discuss patient surveys and Patient satisfaction.
  • Implementation - Dental Hygiene Modalities: Discuss and apply principles of instrumentation – design and application.
