ENG-270 Asia Through Its Movies

An intensive literary studies approach to contemporary Asian (broadly defined) movies. In this course, we will study Asian history, society, and culture through select movies’ representations of family dynamics, gender norms, youth culture, nationalism and politics, history and memory, and shifting identities. Along the way, we examine the methods of storytelling employed in genres such as wu-xia, musicals, gangster, family drama, and art house. Students must budget for subscriptions to online streaming services and rentals.
