EDUC-2050 Language and Literacy Development
Language and Literacy Development is an exploration of the connection between oral language and formal reading and writing instruction. Students will examine theoretical frameworks such as The Simple View of Reading and Scarborough's Reading Rope. They will learn the knowledge and practices needed to effectively teach foundational literacy skills based on the science of reading. The course emphasizes explicit, systematic, and evidence-based instruction in key reading components: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, as well as oral language and writing. Students will demonstrate proficiency in Standard 1--Foundational Literacy Concepts--of the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Standards. Additionally, the course will address InTASC standards, focusing on Learner Development (Standard 1), Content Knowledge (Standard 4), and Planning for Instruction (Standard 7). Formerly EDU-253.
