Theatre
The College of Idaho's Department of Theatre invites exploration of the art and craft of theatre, including both the artistic and technical processes of creating this living art form. Auditions for productions are open to students of all majors and minors; our courses serve students of all majors as well. The program helps students gain valuable experience on and off the stage as they hone their skills and talents, become artful communicators, and learn more about this historic form of human expression.
Why Study Theatre at The College of Idaho?
Students are actively involved in making theatre at The College of Idaho by participating in mainstage productions ranging from Shakespeare to contemporary comedies and dramas. Scarlet Masque, a student theatre organization on campus, provides additional opportunities to hone their theatrical skills. Our comprehensive curriculum includes classes in acting, stagecraft, film studies, theatre history, stage makeup, stage combat, and theatre design (scenic, lighting, and costume). All the while, theatre students will receive individual mentoring from professors who work professionally as actors, directors, and theatrical designers.
Career Opportunities for Theatre Students
A major or minor in Theatre not only prepares students for graduate study, a variety of professional theatre and performing arts occupations, but also for work in any other field that values the strong communication and collaboration skills developed by study in this art form. Our graduates have gone on to perform with the Blue Man Group, serve as stage managers on Broadway, and work as professional actors, directors, playwrights, scenic artists, and costumers in numerous theatres across the country. We have graduates who double majored in theatre and another discipline and used their liberal arts education to become doctors, novelists, researchers, professors, administrators, entrepreneurs, web designers, and senators, to name a few.
