III. Catalog Course Description

This course is an introduction to oil painting techniques and fundamentals of seeing. Students will become comfortable with the characteristics of oil painting through the  exploration of color, form, space, volume and light and working from direct observation. Students will be required to actively participate in regular group critiques.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Understand the necessary skills and basic vocabulary through lectures, demonstrations, assignments, and critiques.
  • Focus on painting from life through direct observation.
  • Develop safe studio practices regarding the handling of paints and chemicals within a communal studio space, with an awareness of personal safety and environmental impact.
  • Distinguish between Indirect and Direct methods of painting and the inherent characteristics of each.
  • Understand the history of painting regarding artists, movements, methods, and cultures.
  • Enter the workforce assisting in gallery work or art education.
