WELD 239 Structural Steel Welding*

This course is designed to teach students the fabrication and welding of structural steel utilizing the GMAW, FCAW-G, FCAW-S and SMAW processes. This course utilizes a lecture/lab format which includes classroom discussion and lab demonstrations. Students will explore AWS D1.1 codes and standards as they pertain to the basic structural welding of plate, I-beam and tubing projects given by the instructor. Projects will be saved to be instituted into a capstone class. Topics covered will include GMAW and FCAW theory, laser layout, wire nomenclature, structural shapes and their uses, metallurgy, basic orthographic drawings along with bill of materials.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the use of GMAW equipment (i.e., spray transfer, globular, short circuit, pulse)
  • Preform acceptable welds in GMAW/FCAW as per AWS D1.1 in various positions.
  • Identify and explain the use of FCAW-G equipment
  • Construct projects in the proper sequence
  • Apply fundamental Print reading, measurement and layout/fit-up techniques.
  • Identify and explain weld imperfections and causes.
  • Apply proper layout and fit-up techniques.
  • Students will be assessed and graded based upon the successful completion of the course competencies. Attendance, attitude, and adherence to standard shop safety practices. Course competencies will be handed out the first week of class.
  • Successfully complete an AWS qualification
  • Have a broader understanding of structural steel
