HORT 234 Greenhouse Management

This hands-on course allows students to produce floral, bedding and foliage plants in a state-of-the-art greenhouse on campus at the College of Southern Idaho while managing cultural requirements for a variety of plants. All greenhouse types will be investigated as well as structures, controls, and practices pertaining to the management and maintenance of a production greenhouse in the horticulture industry.

III. Catalog Course Description

This hands-on course allows students to produce floral, bedding and foliage plants in a state-of-the-art greenhouse on campus at the College of Southern Idaho while managing cultural requirements for a variety of plants. All greenhouse types will be investigated as well as structures, controls, and practices pertaining to the management and maintenance of a production greenhouse in the horticulture industry.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify components and materials of common greenhouses.
  • Recommend heating requirements for different types of greenhouses.
  • Recommend cooling requirements for different types of greenhouses.
  • Identify pests and diseases common to greenhouse plants.
  • Diagnose problems with greenhouse mechanisms and processes.
  • Produce a plant from seed through transplants to saleable size.   
  • Propagate different plant varieties used for greenhouse production.
  • Manage a hydroponics growing system.
