Students will be taught proper procedures for layout of projects. Students will be able to make drawings, produce cutting and materials lists, approximate labor time and cost, and make cost sheets. Step-by-step procedure will demonstrated by students. Corequisite: CABW 100A and 100B.

III. Catalog Course Description

Students will be taught proper procedures for layout of projects. Students will be able to make drawings, produce cutting and materials lists, approximate labor time and cost, and make cost sheets. Step-by-step procedure will demonstrated by students. Corequisite: CABW 100A and 100B.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Have every student gain more self awareness of the wood working industry and the skills that are needed to manage their time on projects.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Students will be taught the proper procedures for several layouts. Pattern making is a big part of this block. How to set up a grid and follow with scale a full scale layout of actual parts and shapes. Step by step procedure will be determined by each project. Layout of a floor plan for a set of kitchen cabinets after receiving the parameters. The tasks to be done in this class are visual and discussed as how we can manipulate wood to create shapes, and control problems. How one would go about starting a project with thought to wood types, how to best layout parts and pieces to result in best use of time and materials.

Lecture on "Proper Direction to Proceed with making a Layout" Overview of chapters 1-4 in modern Cabinetmaking on layout procedures to follow after designing is completed. Handout #1 Layout a rocking chair rocker. Handout #2 Sketch of kitchen layout assigned. Make a cut list of a specific project (varies on year)" Lecture on "Lay out a Template" Box Joint jig layout Task sheet #3 Make a template (different ones each year) Lecture on "How to figure your costs" Lecture on "How to Layout for Laminated Patterns" example curves for Table aprons etc. How to layout a Kitchen Lecture Handout #4 Layout your kitchen Demonstration/Lecture on laying out a kitchen, what is standard what is custom. How to work with the triangle theory. Draw a layout of a kitchen given parameters from instructor, explain your decisions. Lecture/Demonstration – "How to Layout a Corner Cabinet" Lecture/Demonstration – "How to Layout a Curved Cabinet" Lecture/Demonstration – "How to layout for routing a template or pattern. Lecture/Demonstration – "How to use a framing square to layout angles. Lecture/Demonstration – "How to layout for shaping" Test on making a layout Lecture/ Demonstration – "How to layout a cabinet or a piece of furniture for built-in applications." Handout #5 Layout for routing (could involve making a jig) Handout # 6 Layout for a curve jig and part. (Ex: curved counter edge, Table apron, curved bed rail. Comprehensive test.
