III. Catalog Course Description

Students will explore the functions and employment of human resources to achieve organizational strategic goals. HR legal environment, recruitment and selection, training and development, compensation and benefits, performance appraisals, workforce diversity and practical skills for managing people through the understanding and use of HR functions and systems will be explored.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Human Resources Management
  • Identify and describe the goals of human resource management.
  • Describe the job of human resources managers from the perspectives of professionalism and careers.
  • Identify Federal and State employment laws applicable to management decisions.
  • Discuss the legal, financial, and procedural considerations and implications involved in hiring, disciplining, and terminating employees.
  • Appraise the ethical impact of following and enforcing policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Analyze various compensation and benefits packages.
  • Identify the differences between union and nonunion organizations, and describe the importance of union/management relations.
  • Analyze workplace human resource needs and develop training materials to address weaknesses.
  • Discuss current legal and social ramifications of "downsizing" or "right sizing" an organization.
  • Discuss the impact of globalization and diversity on human resource management.
