ENGL-2410 Asia Through Its Movies
(TEXTS & CONTEXTS, ENGAGING DIFFERENCE) An intensive literary studies approach to contemporary Asian (broadly defined) movies. We will study Asian history, society, and culture through representations of family dynamics, gender norms, youth culture, nationalism and politics, history and memory, and shifting identities. Possible genres studied are wu-xia, musicals, gangster, family drama, and art house. Students must budget for subscriptions to online streaming services and rentals. Formerly ENG-270.
