PHIL-3016 Philosophy of Mind
(TEXTS & CONTEXTS, ENGAGING DIFFERENCE) This is a course on the nature of mind, with an emphasis on the relation between mind and body. Sample topics might include: Is the mind identical with the brain, or a functional state of the brain? If neither, is it a computer program the brain runs, a nonphysical soul, or something else? How pervasive is consciousness? Is consciousness an illusion? How can a thought be about something? Is there a persisting self? Formerly PHI-316.
