DAN147 World Dance I

World Dance is a study of the fundamentals of West African (Ghana, Burkina Faso, Senegal) and Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti and Cuba) dance styles. Emphasis is on cultivating relevant technique(s) as well as increasing self-expression through an expanded movement vocabulary. Students will learn sharp rib and hip coordinations of the African dances, and folk and modern Latin dances, such as Meringue and Bomba. Focus is on how Afro-Caribbean dances influenced Modern Dance. The general principles of dance technique requires proper alignment, center point of balance, opposition balance, transfer of weight, specific rhythm patterns, turns and turning techniques. See Dance Coordinator if you have physical limitations that may prevent you from completing these activities.
