2020-2021 Graduate Catalog

STME 5912 MOLECULAR GENETICS AND LABORATORY TECHNIQUES

Advanced molecular genetics course to serve as basis for other coursework. Course will start with study of structure and function of genes to include heredity, genetic variation, mutations and gene expression. Population genetics to be discussed. The later lectures of the course will focus on specific clinical laboratory techniques to provide the genetic counseling student with an understanding of current tests available to the patient. Test discussion to include complete blood count/chemistry, hemoglobin electrophoresis, biochemical tests and molecular tests to include first generation sequencing and next generation sequencing inclusive of whole genome sequencing and whole exome sequencing. Newborn screening to be reviewed. Genetic modification techniques to be discussed.
