STME 5930 ETHICAL PERSPECTIVES OF GENETICS
This course is an examination of ethical issues in genetics with specific application to the profession of genetic counseling. The Code of Ethics of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC); Ethical, Legal and Social Implications program of the Human Genome Project; privacy laws; confidentiality; informed consent; and legal perspectives in human subject research will be reviewed. Further topics of discussion include eugenics; reproductive rights; assisted reproductive technologies, multi-parent family building and preimplantation genetic diagnosis; genetic testing through the lifespan; and legal cases in genetics including gene patenting.
