III. Catalog Course Description
This course includes the study of the Central Service and Materials Management Departments. Special emphasis is placed on cleaning and decontamination of equipment, disinfection of instruments and equipment, and the different methods of sterilization as well as sterile packaging of reusable and disposables and storage of hospital an sterile items.

- Understand the role of central service department in the hospital
- Discuss and describe the job duties of a central service technologist
- Understand the role of materials management in the hospital
- Understand the environmental hazards associated with working in the central sterile processing environment
- Understand how to clean and decontaminate equipment of patient and hospital use
- Discuss and describe the use of the various tools used to clean instruments and equipment
- Gain knowledge of the standards and regulations of working in central sterile processing
- Understand the different types of processing wrappers
- Discuss and describe the use of several types of hospital grade sterilizers
- Discuss and describe the methods of preparation for sterilizing equipment/instruments
- Discuss and describe the storage of sterile and non-sterile equipment and instrumentation
