III. Catalog Course Description
This course is a one semester course that prepares students to take the National Certification Exam for Pharmacy Technicians (The ExCPT exam by PSI). Course fee applies.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- List brand and generic names of the most commonly ordered prescription drugs, their uses, mechanism of action, and side effects.
- Discuss infection control and requirements for handling disposal of pharmaceutical and hazardous wastes.
- Describe sterile and non-sterile compounding regulations and procedures.
- Perform calculations required to fill prescription and medication orders utilizing metric, apothecary, household and avoirdupois systems.
- Exhibit knowledge of pharmaceutical standards, ethics, laws and regulations, electronic medical records, e-prescribing, pharmacy ordering and receiving, management of outdated and recalled pharmaceuticals, billing third party payers, and quality-assurance procedures.
- Describe the settings, duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician.
