DENA 105 Infection Control

This course covers the principles of infection control related to the dental office, including an introduction to microbiology, cross-contamination, and hazard control. The course covers OSHA Standards of Hazard Communication and Blood-borne Pathogens. Aseptic techniques and infection control procedures will be applied in the laboratory setting and assessed through competencies. The management of safety data sheets and labeling of hazardous material will be addressed.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course covers the principles of infection control related to the dental office, including an introduction to microbiology, cross-contamination, and hazard control. The course covers OSHA Standards of Hazard Communication and Blood-borne Pathogens. Aseptic techniques and infection control procedures will be applied in the laboratory setting and assessed through competencies. The management of safety data sheets and labeling of hazardous material will be addressed.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Describe the National Fire Protection Association labeling system and how it is used.
  • Define the classifications of waste and give an example of each.
  • List and describe the classification of instruments, equipment, and surfaces.
  • Identify the three most commonly used methods of heat sterilization and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Describe the purpose of biological monitoring.
  • Identify the components of a Safety Data Sheet.
  • List five ways in which disease transmission can occur in the dental setting and give an example of each.
  • Define the terms “universal and standard precautions."
  • Identify the modes of disease transmission in a dental office.
  • Identify the diseases of concern to dental health care workers.
  • Describe the difference between disinfection and sterilization.
  • Identify the blood borne diseases that are of major concern to dental health care professionals.
  • List the considerations used when selecting a surface disinfectant.
  • Identify and describe 6 types of chemical disinfectants.
