III. Catalog Course Description
This course provides students with a basic understanding of legal issues the hospitality industry faces on a daily basis. The course is designed to alert hotel and restaurant operators to a number of potential legal problems and pitfalls. This is not a course designed to make you a lawyer, but give you the skills to know when to hire a lawyer.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Describe the development of rules regarding the rights and liabilities of innkeepers under the common law system.
- Explain the hotelkeeper’s laws of tort and negligence.
- Discuss hospitality contracts (verbal/written).
- Describe legal issues involving hotel guest relationships, travel and tourism, internet, food and beverage operations, alcohol, public safety and ADA requirements.
- Categorize telephone service resale rights.
- Discuss the legal issues with the hotel and their employees (including the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986).
- Discuss the National Labor Relations Act, use of lie detectors, insurances and taxes,licensing and regulations.
- Summarize antitrust laws and hotels.
- Summarize franchising.
- Discuss the impact of Terrorism on the hotel industry.
