III. Catalog Course Description
Designed to familiarize students with principles of local, regional and general modes of anesthesia. Primary emphasis on monitoring various parameters during induction, maintenance and recovery periods.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Describe and perform skills required during the pre-anesthetic period including diagnostic tests/exams, patient care, protocol selection, and pre-anesthetic agents.
- Discuss and maintain general anesthesia including stages, induction techniques, intubation, maintenance, patient positioning and recovery.
- Explain inhalant and injectable anesthetic agents including: use, classification, precautions and toxicities.
- Describe and perform anesthetic equipment usage, care and maintenance.
- Identify anesthetic emergencies and relate appropriate actions.
- Discuss special techniques used in anesthesia.
- Discuss the importance of anesthetic safety and identify specific measures which should be employed to maintain a safe working environment.
- Complete AVMA Essential Skills: A1-22, N27-28, N30, N102, LAP16, LAP20 & EXO22.
