HREC 243 Backpacking

This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in a backpacking activity, serving as a solid introductory course for the beginning backpacker and good refresher course for participants with backpacking experience. The course will cover the history, philosophy, rules, fundamental/progression of techniques, strategy, and safety in the activity of backpacking. The course includes a backpacking excursion. Fee required.

III. Catalog Course Description

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Be able to effectively plan, pack, and participate in a weekend backpacking trip
  • Demonstrate knowledge about equipment, trail etiquette, and LNT ethics
  • Understand the progression between overnight car camping to weekend excursions to weeklong backcountry trips
  • Students will demonstrate appropriate safety practices
  • Students will improve/maintain their level of cardiovascular fitness throughout the semester
