HACT 222 Wellness Through Pilates

This wellness course introduces students to all seven dimensions of wellness (physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental, financial) and allows students to practice making changes in at least one of the dimensions by establishing, practicing and reflecting on individualized SMART goals related to pilates as a wellness activity. Pilates is an exercise class that improves core strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Each class includes toning and realigning of the body without the bulked-up results of more conventional workouts. This course meets the General Education requirement for wellness.

III. Catalog Course Description

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Learning Outcome 1:Identify. Define the purpose of lifelong wellness. Activity: Readings, lectures, discussions or assignments related to the seven dimensions of wellness. Assessment: Pre/Post Wellness Exam Learning Outcome 2:Plan. Create Individual goal(s) addressing at least one dimension of wellness. Activity: Creating SMART goals for at least one dimension of wellness Assessment: SMART goals worksheet grading rubric Learning Outcome 3:Practice. Apply wellness knowledge to act on individual goals addressing at least one dimension of wellness Activity: Students will actively practice pilates to pursue their individual goal(s). Assessment: Weekly participation in pilates and individual tracking of progress monitored via personal performance metrics. Learning Outcome 4: Reflect. Demonstrate the ability to engage in careful thought about beliefs and behaviors impacting lifelong wellness. Activity: Journal entries and personal performance metric tracking addressing how other dimensions of wellness affected SMART goal progress and how the practice of pilates affected the other dimensions of wellness in ones life. Assessment: Rubric for journal entries and post-test Required Course Level Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to: "Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate knowledge of basic pilate exercises. Activitiy: Weekly participation in practicing pilates exercises. Assessment: Inclusion of supportive positions in SMART goals and journal entries, practical final exam" Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate appropriate safety techniques while practicing pilates. Activity: Safely practicing pilates Assessment: Safety quiz and performance evaluations. Create Individual goal(s) addressing at least one dimension of wellness. 1. Identify the characteristics of a SMART goal. 2. Identify a target behavior for at least one dimension of wellness. 3. Create SMART goals. 4. Practice writing SMART goals. 5. Evaluate goals according to the SMART characteristics. Learning Outcome 3: Practice. Apply wellness knowledge to act on individual goals addressing at least one dimension of wellness 1. Develop a strategy for implementing each SMART goal. 2. Practice a strategy for each SMART goal. 3. Measure progress through journaling and/or self-reporting. Learning Outcome 4: Reflect. Demonstrate the ability to engage in careful thought about beliefs and behaviors impacting lifelong wellness. 1. Compare and contrast the changes from the pre- and post-test wellness exam 2. Reflect on what factors promoted or inhibited your practice in pursuit of reaching SMART goals. 4. Reflect upon the connection between the seven dimensions of wellness to lifelong wellness. Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate knowledge of basic pilates exercises. 1. Explain the correct form and alignment for 10 pilates exercises. 2. Describe appropriate modifications for at least 5 pilates exercies. 3. Describe the benefits provided by each pilates exercise. 4. Identify pilates exercises that support designated SMART goals Learning Outcome 6: Students will demonstrate the knowledge or skills required to safely and effectively engage in pilates as a wellness activity. 1.
