HACT 219 Wellness Through Yoga

This wellness course introduces students to all seven dimensions of wellness (physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental, & financial) and allows students to practice making changes in at least one dimension by establishing, practicing and reflecting on individualized SMART goals related to Yoga. By taking this course, students will learn and practice the ABC’s of Yoga: Awareness and proficiency of basic Yoga postures and personal alignment, Breath for enhancing personal energy levels or calming oneself, and Concentration on the body/mind by incorporating beginning techniques for visualization and relaxation. This course meets the general education requirement for wellness.

III. Catalog Course Description

This wellness course introduces students to all seven dimensions of wellness (physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental, & financial) and allows students to practice making changes in at least one dimension by establishing, practicing and reflecting on individualized SMART goals related to Yoga. Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Explain proper modifications of yoga poses to address injury prevention
  • Understand proper body alignment
  • Demonstrate the application of pose modifications
  • Differentiate between tension and pain
  • Explain the concept of body awareness
  • Compare and contrast the changes from the pre- and post-test wellness exam
  • Create a yoga sequence to support SMART goal
  • Define the seven dimensions of wellness
  • Demonstrate appropriate safety techniques while practicing yoga
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic yoga positions
  • Determine how the practice of yoga will promote SMART goal
  • Evaluate SMART goals according to the SMART characteristics
  • Explain the relationship between lifelong wellness and the seven dimensions of wellness
  • Identify a target behavior for at least three dimensions of wellness
  • Measure progress through journaling and self-reporting
  • Reflect on what factors promoted or inhibited your practice in pursuit of reaching SMART goals
