BUSM 276 Introduction to Non-Profit Management

This course applies management concepts and approaches to nonprofit organizations. Additionally, this course explores the characteristics of effective and ethical management and leadership in nonprofit organizations, and examines the roles of the executive director, the board, staff and volunteers. The course also explores the relationship of grant writing to an organization’s strategy for fundraising, and outlines the six stages of grant writing and highlighting grant writing best practices.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course applies management concepts and approaches to nonprofit organizations. Additionally, this course explores the characteristics of effective and ethical management and leadership in nonprofit organizations, and examines the roles of the executive director, the board, staff and volunteers. The course also explores the relationship of grant writing to an organization’s strategy for fundraising, and outlines the six stages of grant writing and highlighting grant writing best practices.

  • Describe the governance of nonprofits, including the types of boards and the relationship between boards and executive directors
  • Explain how nonprofits establish their vision and strategic direction
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of servant leadership
  • Discuss how nonprofit managers supervise staff and volunteers
  • Outline key financial issues facing nonprofits
  • Explain the basics of nonprofit fundraising and plan a fundraising event
  • Outline the grant writing process and write a grant proposal
  • Outline methods for assessing nonprofit performance
