PHI-314 Theory of Knowledge

A survey of various answers to philosophical questions about knowledge. Sample topics might include skepticism and dogmatism: Can we know anything about the objective world? Should we fundamentally tilt toward doubt or belief? What is it to doubt or believe in the first place? Or social epistemology: When can we learn something from someone’s saying so? How is our capacity as knowers affected by power and social position? What should we do when experts disagree? Or a priori knowledge, especially pressing for philosophers: What kinds of truths can we know from the armchair? Each topic will bear in some way on the nature, value, and foundations of knowledge.
