ANSC-2310 Partying

(SELF & SOCIETY, ENGAGING DIFFERENCE) Parties in all their forms are among the most meaningful and important occasions in humans' lives, but they are rarely given serious or sustained scholarly attention as a subject of their own.  This course considers a diverse range of party rituals across history and cultures, and considers their sociological causes and consequences.  Students will engage in participant-observation, discussions, and presentations to the class, drawing on theories of ritual, effervescence, and solidarity, as well as of deviance, intoxication, and stratification, to develop their own sociological perspectives on parties.
