SOC-405 Power and Identity
This course will engage students in past and current debates about power and identity. We will explore the classic "race, class, gender" trio as members of a larger family of intersecting categories. Specific topics, such as ableism, Afro-futurism, (un)documented migration, multi-racial relationships, sexualities, transgender athletes, or identarian vs. class-based solidarity, will shift based on instructor and student interest. Regardless of the topics, we will examine them using a diverse range of theoretical approaches, such as intersectionality, decoloniality, and Critical Theory, to name a few. Students will wrestle with difficult texts and lead seminar discussions to animate these debates. To more easily welcome students from other departments, there is no specific prerequisite; however, we strongly recommend students have junior or senior standing.
