III. Catalog Course Description

The student is introduced to the skills in chair side procedures and assisting in a variety of dental procedures. The student learns selected laboratory procedures including the proper use, maintenance, and safety of laboratory equipment.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• Transfer instruments using the single-handed technique.
• Identify accessories and correctly attach them to the low-speed handpiece.
• Identify restorative instruments.
• Identify hand (manual) cutting instruments.
• Use a dental instrument intraorally.
• Use the dental mirror intraorally.
• Demonstrate preparation of anesthetic syringe.
• Identify injection sites
• Describe types of local anesthetics.
• Demonstrate use and administration of nitrous oxide.
• Identify rotary cutting instruments and correctly attach them to the appropriate dental handpiece or attachment.
• Identify basic endodontic instruments.
• Demonstrate instrument transfer using a selection of instruments.
• Identify dental handpieces and correctly attach them to the dental unit.
• Identify accessory instruments and items.
• Demonstrate the proper use of a dental mirror.
• Explain types of topical anesthetics and placement of topical anesthetics
