SS4055 Space Operations for the Warfighter

SS4055 provides the 366 curriculum experience in space operations analysis, integration, and planning.  Students will leverage the concepts that they were exposed to during previous courses to analyze a threat driven scenario, culminating in the production of a injects to a Space Operational Plan (OPLAN) or Space Appendix to an OPLAN.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of SS4055 students will have the following knowledge and skills/abilities:

  • Knowledge.
  • Students shall analyze the strategic aspects of space warfare including space-related policy, strategic environments, and the theory and nature of space warfare.
  • Students shall gain experience with various DoD space and space-adjacent organizations.
  • Students shall describe the purpose of a staff estimate, how it evolves over time, and how and where to find and write information into a plan or appendix to a plan with a focus on space operations.
  • Students shall be able to describe the roles and responsibilities of the CCMDs and how they are assigned. 
  • Students shall describe each of the various types of plans that are used within the DOD and the primary reference guidance documents that drive those plans.
  • Students shall describe the role of the CJCS as the Global Integrator.
  • Students shall describe how the JSCP drives planning across multiple combatant commands.
  • Students shall describe the concepts that govern comprehensive adversary-focused deterrence.

     

  • Skills/Abilities.
  • Students utilize the elements of design and the Joint Planning Process to develop a candidate solution to a military operation with a focus on space operations that support, enable, or are supported by terrestrial operations.
  • Students shall brief the most important aspects of the COA to the commander.
  • Students shall present the most important details from space plans or appendices to a commander or group of commanders in a formal briefing.
  • Students shall write components of a doctrinally based Space OPLAN or Space Appendix to an OPLAN.
