CJ 3300 Prejudice/Violence and Criminal Justice
COURSE EXAMINES THE CAUSES, INCIDENCE RATES, AND CRIMINIAL JUSTICE HANDLING OF BIAS MOTIVATED INCID ENTS. COURSE MATERIALS INCLUDE HISTORICAL, LEGAL, SOCIAL, AND OTHER SOURCES OF DATE THAT ELUCIDATES HOW PREJUDICE AND DISCRIMINATION AFFECT THE DAILY LIFE OF ALL PEOPLE IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. BESIDE EXAMINING HOW PREJUDICE INFLUENCES RACIAL PROFILIN G, SEXUAL HARASSMENT, LEGISLATIVE DISCRIMINATION A ND OTHER FORMS OF MARGINALIZATION, THE COURSE REQU IRES THAT STUDENTS ENGAGE IN REFLECTIVE THINKING ABOUT THE INFLUENCES AFFECTING THEIR OWN LIVES, AN D ENCOURAGES THEM TO ENGAGE IN A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF INSTITUTIONALIZED FORMS OF PREJUDICE. SOCIAL NO RMS ARE CHALLENGED AND EXPLORED AS FACTORS THAT MA Y INFLUENCE SOME FORMS OF HOSTILITY INCLUDING EXAM PLES ON SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS AND/OR WORKPLACE SETTIN GS. STUDENTS EXAMINE HOW EXTREME PREJUDICIAL BELIE FS CAN UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES RESULT IN ACTS OF BIAS-MOTIVATED HATRED. THE COURSE EXAMINES THE LINKS BETWEEN PREJUDICE AND BIAS MOTIVATED BEHAVIO RS, THE CHALLENGES POSED BY THE FIRST AMENDMENT IN PROSECUTING BIAS CRIMES, THE COMMUNITY IMPACT AFTE R BIAS INCIDENTS TAKE PLACE, AND THE CRIMINAL JUST ICE SYSTEM HANDLING BIAS.
