Program Description:

M.A. in Fine Arts: Teaching Certification is a 41-credit academically intensive program for individuals who wish to become professional certified art educators. The Program's philosophical approach is rooted in developmental psychology and supported by contemporary research in the field. Admission to the program is competitive and by application and interview. Certain courses and fieldwork components are chronological in sequence. Therefore, all prospective applicants are urged to contact the program coordinator as soon as possible to discuss the course of studies and ensure a timely placement in required fieldwork. Our graduates do exceptionally well at obtaining teaching position in New Jersey and beyond.


Admissions Requirements:


In addition to the University’s admission requirements:

  • 33 semester hours of studio art courses and 12 semester hours of art history on the undergraduate level

  • A departmental interview involving an assessment of the applicant’s:

    • Studio portfolio

    • Proficiencies in academic writing

    • Undergraduate grade records

    • Qualifying scores on Praxis Core: Academic Skills for Educators Test (applicants may request to be provisionally admitted into the program while awaiting testing dates and receipt of scores, however qualifying scores must be presented within the first semester for both retention in the program and commencement of all fieldwork).

    • Evidence of verbal communication skills.

Degree Requirements:

  • 41 credits

  • Passing scores on “Praxis I: Academic Skills for Educators” Exam (prior to beginning fieldwork).

  • Passing scores in “Praxis II: Art Content Area Exam” prior to commencement of FA 5991 Clinical Practice in Graduate Art Education III (Student Teaching).

  • Final written thesis
