III. Catalog Course Description

This course is the continuation of NURP 120. Clinical experience emphasizes acute medical-surgical care with exposure to ancillary hospital services, i.e. operating room and various therapies including physical, speech, occupational, and respiratory.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Practice applying acquired nursing knowledge, skills, and ethics safely in real or simulated patient care settings.
  • Understand the physiological differences between normal and pathological body conditions in adults or, in some cases, all age groups.
  • Know how to connect drug therapies with corresponding diseases, conditions, and physiological imbalances.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with perioperative environments and associated client needs.
  • Integrate pharmacological knowledge, skills, and ethics obtained from pharmacology courses safely into real or simulated patient care.
  • Discover, initiate, and improve positive individual leadership traits and skills as a healthcare team leader in a real or simulated patient care setting.
  • Have a working knowledge of the nursing process and how it is used to plan and perform care for patients suffering from common diseases and disorders.
  • Explain the etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, medical management, and prognosis of common respiratory, cardiovascular, blood, diabetic, endocrine, and immune/HIV disorders, as well as associated assessments, diagnostic tests, and nursing interventions.
  • Explain the unique needs and values of diverse patient populations
  • Demonstrate understanding of perioperative surgical environments, healthcare roles and responsibilities, pain management, and potential patient needs within each perioperative stage.
  • Expand on the benefits and complexities of appropriate patient teaching.
