LAWE 204 Law Enforcement Skills 4
This course will cover Medical Aspects, Overview of Legal System, Inmate Discipline, Staff Inmate Contact, Jail Standards, Garrity Rule, Jail Liability, PREA, Detention Officer Survival, Hostage Survival, Transport, Restraint and Pat downs, Cell Search, Fire Evacuation, Con Games, Inmate Classification. This six-day academy enables students who have completed the POST patrol academy to obtain their POST detention certification.
Students may only earn credit for either LAWE 204 or LAWE 205. Students may not earn credit for both.

III. Catalog Course Description
This course will cover Medical Aspects, Overview of Legal System, Inmate Discipline, Staff Inmate Contact, Jail Standards, Garrity Rule, Jail Liability, PREA, Detention Officer Survival, Hostage Survival, Transport, Restraint and Pat downs, Cell Search, Fire Evacuation, Con Games, Inmate Classification. This six-day academy enables students who have completed the POST patrol academy to obtain their POST detention certification.
Students may only earn credit for either LAWE 204 or LAWE 205. Students may not earn credit for both.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Describe detention safety issues.
- Explain Idaho Jail Standards and demonstrate proper fire safety equipment usage.
- Understand Idaho law and liability regarding inmate safety.
- Understand deputy survival regarding con games.
- Demonstrate integrity and ethical decision making
- Understand and demonstrate the dynamics related to hostage survival.
- Define the reasons and how to perform a proper cell search
- Understand the importance of how to keep Idaho jails in compliance with Idaho Jail Standards.
- Describe the restraint, transport and pat down techniques.
- Explain the medical/legal aspects of jails.
- Understand the constitutional provisions, statues relating to the legal meaning of arrest and the issues related to warrant service.
- Define inmate classification and the objective classification system.
- Demonstrate the dynamics related to hostage survival
- Define the reasons and how to perform a proper cell search
V. Topical Outline (Course Content)
Explain the medical/legal aspects of jails The constitutional, State laws and department policies relating to use of force The constitutional provisions, statutes relating to and the legal meaning of arrest and understand the issues related to warrant service The factors that influence inmate behavior and due process as it relates to jail discipline Explain the difference between inmate rights and privileges The constitutional considerations related to inmates The staff inmate relationship and issues surrounding inappropriate contact Keeping the Idaho jails compliance with the Idaho Jail Standards The Garrity Rule and how it relates to officers The liability issues as it relates to detention facilities The governing rules, mandates and policies relating to PREA Issues related to officer survival as it relates to detention officers The dynamics related to hostage survival The restraint, transport and pat down techniques as it relates to detention officers Define the reasons for and conduct a proper cell search Explain the Idaho Jail Standards regarding Fire Safety Identify the protectors an officer must use to avoid inmate manipulation Define classification and identify and explain the 4 steps in the objective classification system

Assessment Strategy Narrative
Written assessments will be given at the end of each training section. The written assessments and weekly oral assessments (given via Kahoot) make up the final letter grade for the course.
