This course examines developmentally appropriate practices regarding health, safety, and nutrition for diverse young children (birth through age 8). Students will use this knowledge to implement effective teaching strategies and to create healthy, safe, challenging, and respectful environments.

- Understand content knowledge related to the health, safety, and nutrition of diverse young children
- Use knowledge of child development and risk-assessment to create healthy, safe, challenging, and respectful environments for all young children
- Explore professional and community resources that promote the health and safety of young children
- Create and implement a resource to benefit the health of children and families
- Integrate various areas of health into classroom practice (mental health, physical health, oral health, social health, and emotional health)
- Explain the benefits of nature-based education

Assessment: Students will plan, investigate and produce a policy and portfolio of teaching strategies and environments for healthy children in group settings. Student will reflect through discussions, essays and written assessments. Assessment: Students will plan and design curriculum and environments which balance safety, risk and persistence through daily lesson plans, brochures and presentations. Students will reflect through discussion and written presentations. Assessment: Students will plan an investigation of nutritious eating at each developmental stage through menus, portfolio of supportive teaching strategies and observations in the lab school classrooms. Students will reflect through discussions and written presentations.
