Fundamental concepts of animal husbandry and its foundation in the science of animal production; introduction to the technical subject matter of animal production.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Provide an overview of the role animals play in the agricultural industry in the production of food and fiber
  • Recognize and describe behavioral principles of safe and humane livestock handling
  • Identify and describe common animal husbandry practices used in the safe and efficient management of various livestock species.
  • Compare and contrast intensive and extensive livestock production systems for common livestock species.
  • Develop a livestock management plan for a given species that addresses the following: facilities design, waste management, feeding and nutrition, breeding and genetics, veterinary care and oversight, and vaccination and antibiotic use protocols
