Program Overview:

The Outdoor Recreation Leadership Program is designed for students who would like to develop the skills to lead others in challenging environments. Students will gain technical skills in wilderness travel, whitewater boating, rock climbing, and snow travel. The courses in this program are primarily field-based with hands-on opportunities for learning. Students will get ample time meeting with and learning from professionals in the outdoor industry. Once they complete the program, students will be able to start careers in the guiding industry, wilderness therapy, winter recreation, wildland fire, trail maintenance, and outdoor education.

Program Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the Outdoor Recreation Leadership program, a student will be able to:

1. Understand and apply the skills and knowledge necessary to work in various entry-level positions in the Outdoor Recreation industry.

2. Demonstrate proficiency in and receive industry certifications in the following : Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace Trainer, Swift Water Rescue, Avalanche Level 1
3. Demonstrate proficiency in the following: Outdoor Navigation, Team Building, Challenge Course Facilitation, Wilderness Interpretation
4. Function effectively individually and within team structures on various projects and assignments.
5. Understand, utilize and prepare risk management plans.
6. Discuss and practice outdoor food safety.
7. Plan and organize outdoor programs, trips and events.
8. Apply the principles of ethics when performing responsibilities of a manager and evaluate their importance to the recreation industry.
