IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of theatre, terminology, methods, and practices by participating in theatre department productions by assignment as a performer, technician, management, or business support person and by successfully completing those assignments.
- Recognize the complexity of theatre art in order to evaluate and improve their own critical thinking skills as evidenced by participation in the production process. Showing proper use of terminology and demonstrating ability to converse knowledgeably about the field.
- Critically evaluate the influence of the works of an individual or a system on the play selected for the production and then work out a scheme of presenting that information in both written and oral presentation.
- Explore the cultural diversity of the world population as expressed in the arts and evaluate the differences and similarities of different ages, peoples, and movements as related to their production experience.
- Discuss the importance of the arts as an influence in their own lives and as evidence of our culture in order to understand the importance of a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
- Appreciate the importance of creativity in their own work and in the works of others.

Required Assignments
This course is designed to educate the student by exposing him or her to the field of Theatre and to provide the opportunity to examine, evaluate, retain, and utilize information in the content area. Students will examine how the arts affect and are affected by changes in culture and learn to discern and evaluate those relationships. Attendance will be evaluated to insure that each student has equal opportunity to access the information presented in the class. Assignments will be completed when scheduled. Students must complete all production assignments. Students will participate in class discussions, present materials orally, and successfully complete the course objectives. Students will also serve as part of a scenic construction crew for College Productions and will demonstrate the ability to work with scenic materials. Students will also be asked to fulfill assignments related to maintaining the theatre and its support facilities and will also be asked to fulfill assignments related to the management and business of the theatre. These assignments may include but are not limited to: Acting in a major role in a college production; acting in a supportive role in a college production; working on a technical running crew supporting a college production in makeup, costuming, or running crew; building sets and properties; working on a lighting crew; stage management; assistant to the director; publicity; house management; maintenance and cleaning of the theatre and its related facilities; ticket sales; ushering; etc.
Required Exams
It has been the traditional practice of the College of Southern Idaho theatre department to mount four productions each academic year, (two each semester) however circumstances may dictate otherwise. The department may produce more or fewer productions depending upon the budget, size, and scope of those productions and the number of students in the department. A production schedule will be provided for students at the beginning of each semester and will be discussed the first week of each semester. Rehearsals............................................................100 pts. Students will be asked to attend rehearsals for the department productions scheduled each semester. Assignments may include acting, technical, or theatre management duties. Class Participation.................................................100 pts. Students will be asked to serve in a variety of ways to support the theatre process. This course is an opportunity for students to practice the skills they have learned in the other theatre department courses in a theatre laboratory environment. These courses include but are not limited to acting, makeup, stagecraft, voice, lighting, etc. Production Assignment General..............................200 pts. Students will be asked to serve in a variety of ways which may range from acting a role in a production to cleaning the theatre in preparation for an audience. Students will be evaluated on how they generally fulfill those assignments. Technical Participation...........................................150 pts. Students are required to fulfill a technical assignment for this course which may include, building scenery, lighting crew, house management duties, makeup crew, properties construction and management, running crew, costuming, etc. etc. Performance Participation......................................150 pts. Students are required to participate in at least one production each semester. Ensemble.............................................................100 pts. Theatre requires the cooperative efforts of all members of the production team. Students will be evaluated on their ability to contribute to that ensemble process. Production Assignment Specific.............................100 pts. Students will fulfill at least two specific production assignments each semester.
