This is an introductory course which focuses upon activities which lead to marriage, the nature of role interaction in marriage, marital conflict and adjustment, child rearing, and processes of family interaction.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Define various forms of marriage, courtship, and intimacy within US culture and globally.
- Compare roles in the US family and contrast that idealized form with alternate forms of family.
- Categorize the adaptations and adjustment to marriage living and how that interrelates with cultural expectations.
- Construct strategies to deal with different types of marital conflict within US cultural norms.
- Describe various patterns of rearing children, within diverse family formations, and create strategies for addressing issues.
- Synthesize sociological perspectives to create an explanation for marriage and family within society.
