Only students completing an approved, registered Relay Technician apprenticeship program are eligible for this course.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Understand the applicable OSHA standards for substation work and be able to identify hazards around the job site as well as the required procedures to mitigate them.
- Solve mathematical electrical calculations used in symmetrical component power and fault calculations.
- Understand the theory of Symmetrical Components involved in power system protection and relaying.
- Identify the equipment used in the operation of distribution systems such as fuses, reclosers, and sectionalizers.
- Perform relay maintenance on generator and synchronous condensers, transformers and reactors, busses, lines, and capacitors.
- Perform power system communication operation analysis using information from relays, communication equipment, and dispatch logs.
- Use various equipment such as oscilloscopes, power system analyzers, portable DFR's, Doble and Manta to test relays.
- Operate a bucket truck and perform aerial bucket rescue procedures.
- Understand AC theory and application as they pertain to electrical power generation, distribution and transmission systems.
